Key advantages of chromebooks
- Price: The majority of chromebooks cost significantly less than a Windows or Mac laptop. Many can be had for $199-$500.
- Speed: Chromebooks boot up and are ready to use in around 8 seconds. This is because of their SSD hard drives and the lightweight chrome OS.
- Battery: Expect to get six hours or more from the battery on an average chromebook. This is about twice what you might get on a standard Windows laptop.
- Security: The Chrome OS has built-in virus and malware protection so you never need to worry about malicious files when using a chromebook.
- Sync: Chromebooks sync all your apps and passwords with chrome browsers on other computers. So, if you use chrome at work, you can sync all data to your chromebook at home automatically.
- Cloud Storage: You get 100GB of google drive storage free for two years with all new chromebooks. This is a huge amount of space and something that would cost a significant amount of money for a comparable service with Dropbox, Skydrive or Box.
- Updates: Chromebook update themselves silently, automatically, and in the background. So, your device is always up to date and works just the way you need it to.
- Weight: This varies depending on the chromebook you buy, but most are lightweight devices that are portable and easy to carry with you when you need them.
Taking Care of Your chromebook
General Precautions:
○ No food or drink is allowed next to your chromebook while it is in use.
○ Cords, cables, and removable storage devices must be inserted carefully into the chromebook.
○ Students should never carry their chromebook while the screen is open unless directed to do so by a teacher.
○ Chromebooks should be shut down when not in use to conserve battery life.
○ Chromebooks should never be shoved into a locker or wedged into a book bag as this may break the screen.
○ Do not expose your chromebook to extreme temperature or direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Extreme heat or cold may cause damage to the chromebook.
○ Always bring your laptop to room temperature prior to turning it on.

A. Carrying the chromebook
The protective shell of the chromebook will only provide basic protection from everyday use. It is not designed to prevent damage from drops or abusive handling. Carrying the chromebook in a padded case is required.
It is recommended that students not place chromebooks in their backpacks. The weight of books and other items can potentially damage the device.

B. Chromebook ScreenCare
The Chromebook screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.
○ Do not lean on top of the chromebook.
○ Do not place anything near the chromebook that could put pressure on the screen.
○ Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover.
○ Do not poke the screen.
○ Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, notebooks).
○ Clean the screen with a soft, dry antistatic, or microfiber cloth. Do not use window cleaner or any type of liquid or water on the chromebook. You can also purchase individually packaged premoistened eyeglass lens cleaning tissues to clean the screen. These are very convenient and relatively inexpensive.
